By late summer 1982 Simple Minds had spent three years learning how to make a record sound like a room. New Gold Dream was where they stopped chasing that and started chasing a feeling — the shimmer of “Someone Somewhere in Summertime”, the pulse of “Promised You a Miracle”, the way Herbie Hancock’s Fender Rhodes turns up on the title track and dissolves. Peter Walsh mixed like a cinematographer, and the songs opened out. It went to number three in the UK and travelled further than any Simple Minds record had before.
